Co je hip hop?
Ukázkově postmoderní kultura černošské a hispánské městské mládeže. Vznikla v 70. letech v New Yorku. V základu se skládá ze čtyř elementů - graffiti, breakdance, dýdžejingu a rapu (pro rap se často úžeji používá právě výraz hip hop). Rap začal jako improvizovaná pouliční poezie rytmicky recitovaná do koláže cizích nahrávek diska, funku, soulu a r'n'b, ale i rocku, inovativně spojovaných na místě z gramodesek dýdžejem. Technická nenáročnost, zábavnost i provokativnost, vzestup etnických menšin v USA a autenticita vyjádření jejich situace vedly ke globálnímu rozšíření hip hopu, vlivu na dominantní západní kulturu a rozlišení do mnoha podžánrů.
Cílem cenzorů je násilný, sexuální, mizogynní, homofonní a drogami nabitý gangsta rap; méně klišovitou tradici udržují alternativy zdůrazňující původní sociální a politické uvědomění a distanc od materialismu, šovinismu či rasismu. S hudbou se rozšířil i jako životní a módní styl (zejména volné oblečení odvozené z basketbalu a baseballu).
